Biography
Révérien Rurangwa is a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, in which forty-three members of his family were murdered at Mugina. His memoir, Génocidé, has been translated into more than ten languages. He speaks at universities, conferences, parliaments and memorials across four continents.
Born in 1979 in Mugina, in the former prefecture of Gitarama in central Rwanda, Révérien Rurangwa was fifteen when neighbours came up the hill at Mugina on 20 April 1994. Forty-three members of his family were murdered in a single afternoon. He survived, gravely wounded, and spent years in surgery and exile before finding the words to testify. His memoir — Génocidé in French, Genocide: My Stolen Rwanda in English — has been translated into more than ten languages and is read in classrooms worldwide. He now lives in Switzerland with his wife Jeanne and their son Ethan, and testifies internationally against forgetting and against denial, speaking in French and English.
